Chevron Oil Platform Fire Offshore Angola Injures 17
On May 20, 2025, a devastating fire broke out on Chevron’s deep-water Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) oil platform, located off the coast of Angola. The incident resulted in the injury of seventeen individuals, with four of them sustaining severe injuries. The platform, situated in the Block 14 concession approximately 60 miles offshore the Cabinda coast, experienced the fire in the basement deck of the multi-storey drilling production facility.
Both Angolan authorities and Chevron, the U.S. oil major, released statements confirming the incident and assuring that an investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. Following the outbreak, all affected individuals were safely evacuated from the platform and transported to receive appropriate medical care on land.
This unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with offshore oil drilling operations. The safety of workers and the protection of the environment must always remain paramount concerns for oil companies operating in these challenging environments.
As the investigation progresses, it is crucial for Chevron and other oil companies to thoroughly review their safety protocols and emergency response procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The well-being of workers and the preservation of the marine ecosystem should always take precedence over production and profits.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and their families during this difficult time. We hope for their swift recovery and urge for a transparent investigation to determine the root cause of the fire and ensure accountability for any lapses in safety measures.
