The 2025 BWBS and NOAA Voluntary Speed Reduction Program Season Begins
The 2025 season for the voluntary NOAA and Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies (BWBS) programs is set to kick off on May 1 and will run until December 31. This initiative aims to protect marine life, specifically blue whales, by urging vessels of 300 gross tons or larger to reduce their speeds to 10 knots or less in designated Voluntary Speed Reduction (VSR) zones.
Both BWBS and NOAA are advocating for the conservation of marine ecosystems and biodiversity by implementing these speed restrictions. By slowing down in these zones, vessels can reduce the risk of fatal ship strikes on marine mammals, including the endangered blue whale population.
It is crucial for all maritime stakeholders to adhere to these guidelines during the specified timeframe. The collaboration between industry players and conservation organizations is vital in ensuring the success of these voluntary programs.
Expanded VSR Zone in the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary
One of the key highlights of the 2025 season is the expansion of the VSR zone in the new Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary in Southern California. Vessels operating in this area are urged to take extra precautions and comply with the speed reduction measures to protect the rich marine biodiversity found in these waters.
The previous 2024 BWBS season was hailed as a significant success, with record levels of participation and cooperation from maritime industry stakeholders. The success of these voluntary programs demonstrates the positive impact that collective efforts can have on marine conservation.
As the 2025 season commences, PMSA extends its gratitude to all its members for their continued support and commitment to promoting sustainable maritime practices. By working together, we can make a real difference in safeguarding our oceans and the magnificent creatures that inhabit them.
