The UK Imposes New Sanctions on Russian Oil Trade

In a significant move to target Russia’s oil trade, the UK has announced a fresh wave of sanctions, focusing on an additional 40 ships involved in the Russian oil industry.

This latest sanctions package marks the most extensive action against Russia’s shadow fleet, bringing the total number of oil tankers sanctioned by the UK to 133, surpassing other European nations.

According to the details released by Britain, the targeted ships have collectively transported over $5 billion worth of Russian oil and oil products in the past six months alone.

Last November, the UK initiated its second-largest campaign against the shadow fleet by blacklisting 30 ships, followed by another 20 ships in December.

The UK’s Foreign Office emphasized that these new sanctions aim to exert additional pressure on Putin’s energy revenues, which serve as a crucial source of funding for Russia’s illegal invasion.

On the same note, the European Union has also taken a strong stance by adopting its 16th package of sanctions against Russia, adding 74 new vessels to the sanctions list, bringing the total to 153.

Furthermore, the United States recently announced a massive sanctions action in January, covering 183 Russian-controlled and shadow fleet ships, marking the most extensive sanctions action to date.
