MODEC Partners with Samsung E&A for Offshore Carbon Capture Project

MODEC has recently announced a significant development in the realm of carbon capture technology, as the company has entered into a Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract with Samsung E&A for the installation of carbon capture technology on a floating, production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

The offshore carbon capture project will involve the installation of a carbon capture module on a MODEC FPSO vessel as a pilot project. This initiative represents a groundbreaking deployment of Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology in an onboard carbon capture setting.

Carbon Clean will play a crucial role in providing FEED support to Samsung E&A, which includes the supply of the rotating packed bed (RPB) technology at the core of CycloneCC and the licensing of the process design package (PDP) for the unit. Samsung E&A will be responsible for conducting detailed engineering to optimize CycloneCC for the offshore environment and the FPSO’s specific conditions.

The innovative CycloneCC technology is specifically designed for offshore maritime environments, offering a significantly smaller footprint compared to traditional solutions. The recently launched CycloneCC C1 series boasts a height reduction of 70% when compared to column-based technologies, making it a highly efficient and compact carbon capture solution.

If the pilot project proves successful, MODEC has indicated that the next phase may involve the installation of a commercial, scaled-up CycloneCC unit across its FPSO fleet. This move aligns with MODEC’s commitment to providing a stable energy supply with minimal greenhouse gas emissions and exploring new floater solutions to transition towards alternative energies.

Koichi Matsumiya, Chief Technical Officer at MODEC, expressed optimism about the project, stating, “We believe that the carbon capture technology proposed by Carbon Clean will be the key to achieving both of our targets. We are dedicated to advancing the readiness level of this technology and implementing it offshore as soon as possible.”

Cheon Hong Park, Executive Vice President and Head of Sustainable Solutions Division at Samsung E&A, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of this collaboration in advancing MODEC’s decarbonization plan and accelerating the commercialization of Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology within the marine industry.

This collaborative effort between MODEC, Samsung E&A, and Carbon Clean marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of sustainable solutions for the offshore energy sector. With a focus on innovation and environmental stewardship, the partners aim to drive progress in carbon capture technology and contribute to a more sustainable future for the industry.
