Dutch Shipbuilder Thecla Bodewes Shipyards Lays Keel for New Diesel-Electric Cargo Vessel

Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, a renowned Dutch shipbuilder, recently marked a significant milestone by laying the keel for the first diesel-electric multi-purpose dry cargo vessel ordered by Navigare Shipping & Logistics, a prominent company based in Norway.

The keel laying ceremony for the 5,600 dwt vessel took place on February 27, 2025, as announced by Thecla Bodewes Shipyards on their social media platforms.

This innovative ship, equipped with diesel-electric propulsion, is part of the Gadus series, consisting of four units currently being constructed at the Dutch shipyard. The contract for these vessels was unveiled in November 2024.

Designed to prioritize fuel efficiency and emission reduction, the Gadus series incorporates advanced automation and control systems that continuously monitor and adjust operations to enhance performance and minimize fuel consumption throughout the voyage.

Moreover, these vessels are engineered to accommodate future technological advancements, including the potential for retrofitting wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) systems and integrating battery banks. The design also allows for easy conversion to alternative fuels like methanol and hydrogen, ensuring adaptability to evolving industry trends.

The first two vessels from the Gadus series, commissioned by Navigare Shipping, are set for delivery in 2026, showcasing Thecla Bodewes Shipyards’ commitment to delivering cutting-edge, sustainable solutions to their clients.
