Siemens Energy Selects Pfisterer for Offshore Grid Connections

Siemens Energy has chosen the German company Pfisterer to provide turnkey cable systems for the BorWin4 and DolWin4 offshore grid connections in the North Sea.

Pfisterer will be responsible for implementing the complete 66 kV AC cable infrastructure between the gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) transformer and submarine cable connection on the DolWin4 and BorWin4 platforms.

This includes planning, engineering services, installation, and project management.

The BorWin4 and DolWin4 projects will link offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the onshore transmission grid, supplying power equivalent to the demand of a major city like Hamburg, as stated by Amprion.

DolWin4 spans approximately 215 kilometers, with around 60 kilometers offshore, while BorWin4 has a total route length of about 280 kilometers, including roughly 125 kilometers at sea.

In 2022, the German transmission system operator (TSO) Amprion awarded the main contracts to Siemens Energy and Dragados Offshore for the converter platform, and Prysmian for the submarine cables. The same suppliers were also chosen for the BorWin4 grid connection.

Allseas will install the platforms for both offshore grid connection projects, with installation set to begin in 2027.

With a transmission capacity of 900 MW each, BorWin4 and DolWin4 are expected to commence operations in 2028.
