MISC Berhad Orders Dual-Fuel Very Large Ethane Carriers from Hyundai Heavy Industries

MISC Berhad (MISC), Malaysia’s energy-related maritime services provider, has recently made headlines with its order for two dual-fuel very large ethane carriers (VLECs) from South Korea’s renowned shipbuilder, Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The deal, valued at approximately $312 million, was finalized in late February 2025, with the vessels set to be constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan. These VLECs, boasting a capacity of 100,000 cbm, are expected to be among the largest of their kind in the world once completed.

With a scheduled delivery by the end of 2028, MISC has already secured a long-term charter agreement with Thailand’s state-owned oil and gas company, PTT Public Company Limited (PTT), for the utilization of these gas carriers. PTT intends to use the VLECs for transporting ethane from export facilities in the United States to Thailand, with the flexibility to carry ethylene and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as well.

Equipped with dual-fuel ethane propulsion engines, the newbuilds are designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and comply with the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III nitrogen oxide (NOx) regulations. Additionally, the vessels will feature shaft generator technology to optimize fuel consumption and emission levels.

Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

MISC Berhad’s investment in eco-friendly vessels extends beyond the VLECs, as the company also made headlines last year for ordering the ‘world’s first’ ammonia dual-fuel Aframax tanker duo. This initiative underscores MISC’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

The ammonia-fueled Aframax tankers, ordered through MISC’s petroleum arm AET, are part of a strategic partnership with PETCO Trading Labuan Company (PTLCL), a subsidiary of Petronas. The vessels are expected to play a significant role in reducing emissions and promoting cleaner energy sources.

Collaboration for Clean Energy Solutions

In a bid to stay ahead of the curve in adopting clean energy solutions, MISC partnered with Swiss marine engine developer WinGD to supply X-DF-A ammonia-fueled engines for its Aframaxes. This collaboration, which includes technology development and crew training initiatives, aims to pave the way for the successful operation of ammonia-fueled vessels in the future.
