HMCS Harry DeWolf Assists in Seizure of 750 Kilograms of Cocaine in the Caribbean Sea

On March 1, 2025, His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Harry DeWolf successfully assisted a United States Coast Guard (USCG) Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) in conducting a seizure of 750 kilograms of cocaine in the Caribbean Sea. This joint operation, supported by Colombian air and maritime assets, resulted in the interception of illicit substances with an estimated street value of $18.8 million.

HMCS Harry DeWolf is currently deployed in support of Operation CARIBBE, Canada’s contribution to the US-led enhanced counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean Sea. As part of this mission, the Canadian Armed Forces work closely with international partners to prevent the flow of illegal drugs into Canada and North America.

Collaboration and Success in Operation CARIBBE

Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz, Commander Maritime Component Command, highlighted the successful collaboration between the Royal Canadian Navy and the United States Coast Guard in ensuring the safety and security of domestic borders and the continental environment. Operation CARIBBE, now in its 19th year, has been instrumental in intercepting illegal narcotics before they reach the streets.

Since its inception in 2006, Operation CARIBBE has been a key component of the broader US-led Operation Martillo. A Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2010 between Canada and the US allows USCG LEDETs to operate from RCN ships and aircraft during counter-narcotics operations in the region.

Continued Efforts and Success Stories

In 2024, HMC Ships Margaret Brooke, Summerside, Edmonton, and Yellowknife collectively interdicted 2,710 kilograms of contraband and illicit substances as part of Operation CARIBBE. These ongoing efforts demonstrate the commitment of both Canadian and American forces to combatting drug trafficking in international waters.

Every successful seizure like the recent operation involving HMCS Harry DeWolf contributes to the overall goal of reducing the impact of drug trafficking on communities in both Canada and the United States. The dedication and cooperation of all involved parties underscore the importance of international partnerships in addressing common security challenges.

As Operation CARIBBE continues to make significant strides in disrupting illicit drug networks, the Royal Canadian Navy remains committed to working alongside its American counterparts to safeguard maritime interests and uphold regional security in the Caribbean Sea.
