Norwegian Shipbuilder VARD Begins Construction of First Hybrid Power Ocean Energy Construction Vessel for Island Offshore

Source: VARD

Norwegian shipbuilder VARD has commenced the construction of the first hybrid power ocean energy construction vessel (OECV) for Island Offshore by cutting the first steel for the newbuild named Island Evolution on March 4 at Vard Shipyards Romania – Braila.

The project manager from Island Offshore, Roy Viggo Fjørtoft, initiated the steel cutting process in the presence of representatives from both companies.

Island Offshore had placed an order with VARD for the design and construction of the hybrid power OECV in May 2024, with an option for two additional vessels. The second vessel, named Island Explorer, was ordered three months later.

Designed as sister vessels based on the VARD 3 25 design, the OECVs will measure 120 meters in length and be equipped to perform various subsea operations such as inspection, maintenance, repair, pipe laying, subsea infrastructure construction, diving support, and remote underwater inspection.

Additionally, the vessels will be capable of handling renewable energy tasks like walk-to-work operations, commissioning, cable laying and repairs, trenching, survey, and gangway system installation.

VARD will provide comprehensive solutions for the vessels, with Vard Interiors delivering interior solutions and a green HVAC R system, and Vard Electro supplying SeaQ equipment and green solutions including energy storage systems and shore connection.

The outfitting, commissioning, and delivery of the vessels will take place at one of Vard’s shipyards in Norway.

The keel laying ceremony for the first vessel is scheduled for May 6, with the delivery of Island Evolution expected in Q1 2027. The steel cutting for the second vessel, Island Explorer, is set for July 1.
