Norwegian Companies North Ammonia and Höegh Evi Partner to Explore Clean Ammonia Supply Chain to Europe

Two leading Norwegian companies, North Ammonia and Höegh Evi, have recently inked a strategic agreement to delve into the possibilities of establishing a clean ammonia supply chain from Norway to Europe. This partnership aims to investigate the potential for delivering hydrogen to European industrial users through the utilization of green ammonia produced in Norway.

The collaboration between North Ammonia and Höegh Evi is focused on harnessing Norway’s abundant renewable energy resources to produce clean ammonia, which serves as a crucial carrier for efficiently transporting hydrogen over long distances. The partners are committed to exploring both technical and commercial solutions that will facilitate the development of scalable infrastructure to support the growth of this emerging market.

Mikkel Tørud, CEO of North Ammonia, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Ammonia is a versatile energy vector with several end user markets currently being matured. In North Ammonia, we actively develop infrastructure for RFNBO ammonia supply to the maritime industry and with solutions from Höegh Evi we can broaden our offering and bring hydrogen to industrial users across Europe.”

Nils Jakob Hasle, EVP Clean Energy at Höegh Evi, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in Europe’s transition to cleaner energy sources, particularly in hard-to-abate industries such as steel, chemicals, and heavy transport. He highlighted the synergy between North Ammonia’s production capabilities and Höegh Evi’s expertise in marine infrastructure, noting that together, they will identify the necessary infrastructure to connect Norwegian renewable resources with the growing demand for clean hydrogen in Europe.

Currently, Höegh Evi is actively involved in developing floating import terminals for hydrogen, utilizing its ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker technology. One notable project is the collaboration with the French port of Port-La Nouvelle to establish a floating terminal for hydrogen imports, which is poised to become a critical hub for importing large volumes of hydrogen and accelerating the adoption of clean energy in Europe.

On the other hand, North Ammonia is making strides in setting up a green ammonia production facility at Fjord Base. Leveraging Fjord Base’s significant maritime activity and access to locally produced green fuels for shipping, North Ammonia aims to strengthen its position as a maritime hub while generating positive impacts through job creation within the local community.
