DP World Inaugurates Modernized South Container Terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port

DP World has recently unveiled its newly modernized South Container Terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, marking a significant milestone in the port’s development. The modernization and expansion project, which has been in progress for the past three years, is part of a 30-year Build-Operate-Transfer concession signed in 2019 with the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani).

The $800 million upgrade has effectively doubled the terminal’s capacity from 1.8 million TEU to 4 million TEU, with plans for further expansion to accommodate up to 5 million TEU in the future. The terminal now boasts a total quay length of 2,150 meters, including a deep-water quay with an 18-meter depth capable of handling up to five ultra-large container vessels simultaneously.

Recognizing the growing demand for perishable cargo, DP World has also expanded the terminal’s capacity for reefer containers from 1,200 to 2,340. Additionally, a state-of-the-art facility for inspecting up to 75 reefers at a time has been developed, making it the largest port-centric facility of its kind in Saudi Arabia.

In line with DP World’s commitment to sustainability, the new terminal features automated and electrified yard cranes aimed at reducing CO2 emissions by 50% over the next five years. The company is also exploring the implementation of floating solar platforms, electrified trucks, and water recycling systems to further minimize its environmental footprint.

Investment in Jeddah Logistics Park

DP World’s presence in Jeddah dates back to 1999, making it the operator’s first concession outside of the UAE. In addition to the South Container Terminal, the company is investing in a large logistics park adjacent to the terminal. The Jeddah Logistics Park, spanning 415,000 square meters, will offer warehousing, distribution, and freight forwarding services, solidifying Jeddah’s position as a key regional trade hub connecting Africa, Asia, and Europe. Construction of the facility commenced in May last year and is scheduled for completion by Q2 2026.

Enhanced Liner Connectivity Through Gemini Cooperation

The recent launch of the Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd has brought about increased liner connectivity advantages for Jeddah Port. Under the Gemini agreement, five new shipping services have been introduced to three Saudi ports, including Jeddah, Dammam, and Jubail. Jeddah has been selected as one of the regional hubs for the Gemini cooperation, connecting the Saudi ports to international terminals in Port Said (Egypt), Tangier (Morocco), Algeciras (Spain), Mundra, and Pipavav (India).
