Finland’s Cinia Repairs Submarine Telecoms Cable Between Finland and Germany
Finland’s Cinia announced on Friday that its C-Lion1 submarine telecoms cable connecting Finland and Germany, which was suspected to have been damaged in January, has been successfully repaired.
Cinia initially detected the damage on January 26 in the same area where another subsea fibre optic cable linking Sweden and Latvia had also experienced issues.
In a statement, Cinia confirmed that the cable fault was minor, and communications through the cable were functioning normally following the repair.
The Baltic Sea region has been on high alert due to a series of infrastructure outages, including power cable, telecom, and gas pipeline disruptions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Many of these outages have been attributed to civilian ships inadvertently damaging the underwater cables while anchoring.
The NATO alliance has increased its presence in the region in response to these incidents, aiming to ensure the security and stability of critical infrastructure networks.
As the situation remains tense in the Baltic Sea region, efforts to safeguard and maintain the integrity of submarine telecoms cables are crucial to sustaining uninterrupted communication services between countries.
