South Korean Shipbuilder Delivers First Hybrid RoRo Vessel to CLdN

South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has successfully delivered the first hybrid roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship to Luxembourg-based shipping company CLdN, marking a significant milestone in eco-friendly maritime transportation.

The impressive 234-meter-long vessel, named Chaumin, is the first of two hybrid 8,000 lane meter RoRo vessels that CLdN ordered in 2022, showcasing a commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

Chaumin is equipped with two conventional main engines along with two large shaft generators, each boasting a power output of 6 MW. These generators can be utilized for power generation or electric propulsion, enabling the ship to achieve a cruising speed of 16-17 knots in full electric mode.

Notably, the vessel incorporates several eco-friendly technologies, including Elomatic’s patented Elogrid tunnel thruster grid, a cutting-edge energy-saving device designed to enhance side thrust for improved maneuverability. This innovative solution is poised to reduce resistance, lower fuel consumption, minimize noise and vibrations, and mitigate the environmental impact of maritime operations.

Furthermore, Chaumin is compliant with NOx Tier III regulations, surpassing CLdN’s current fleet’s environmental standards and offering a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This underscores the vessel’s role in advancing sustainability within the maritime industry.

To enhance navigation and ensure safe operations, HiNAS SVM and HiNAS Navigation systems from Avicus have been integrated into the vessel, providing advanced navigation assistance for efficient and secure voyages.
