The First LR1 Tanker Fitted with Combined Carbon Capture and Scrubber System

The maritime industry is taking significant steps towards reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability practices. The latest development in this area comes from Value Maritime, a company specializing in emission control technology, which has successfully installed a combined system on the LR1 tanker, Nexus Victoria.

Nexus Victoria, a 75,000 dwt tanker owned by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and managed by Synergy Maritime, recently underwent the installation of Value Maritime’s innovative system in Singapore. This system not only includes a SOx scrubber but also features advanced carbon capture technology, making it a groundbreaking solution for reducing emissions from marine vessels.

Hiroyoshi Kubo, Executive Officer – Tanker Unit at MOL, expressed the importance of such systems in decarbonizing vessels that are unable to switch to next-generation fuels. He emphasized the commitment of MOL and Value Maritime to advancing carbon capture solutions and contributing to a sustainable, carbon-neutral industry.

The system developed by Value Maritime, known as the Filtree system, is designed to filter sulfur, CO2, and particulate matter from the exhaust stream of vessels. This plug-and-play system also includes onboard CO2 capture and storage capabilities, allowing the captured CO2 to be reused in various industries, such as greenhouse cultivation and methanol production.

Value Maritime’s VM 15MW next-generation EGCS Filtree system installed on Nexus Victoria is expected to capture 10 percent of the tanker’s CO2 emissions, with scalability potential up to 30 percent. This project marks Value Maritime’s expansion into Japan, with plans to further collaborate across Asia and enhance carbon logistics.

Other shipping companies, such as Eastern Pacific Shipping and Ardmore Shipping, have also embraced Value Maritime’s carbon capture technology on their vessels. The growing interest in such systems highlights their potential to significantly reduce emissions and improve the environmental performance of the maritime industry.

As the industry continues to prioritize sustainability and emission reduction, innovative solutions like Value Maritime’s combined carbon capture and scrubber system are expected to play a crucial role in shaping a greener future for maritime transportation.
