OCIMF Publishes Revised Guidelines for SPM Hawsers

The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) has recently released an updated version of its Guidelines for the Purchasing and Testing of Single Point Mooring (SPM) Hawsers. These guidelines are essential for ensuring the safe mooring of tankers during the transfer of oil cargoes from offshore facilities.

SPM hawsers play a critical role in connecting tankers to Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) units, or offloading buoys. It is imperative that these hawsers meet stringent standards for strength, durability, and reliability to prevent accidents and environmental damage.

The second edition of the guidelines, developed by an OCIMF Working Group, features updated recommendations and the latest product specifications. The inclusion of enhanced visual aids aims to assist manufacturers and purchasers in selecting the appropriate SPM hawsers for their mooring needs. Additionally, the guidelines offer a range of forms, checklists, and inspection report templates to streamline the purchasing and testing process.

Darron L. Biddle, OCIMF’s Publications and Advocacy Director, emphasizes the importance of uniformity in understanding SPM hawsers across the industry. Biddle states, “SPM hawsers are a critical component of offshore operations, and it is essential that all stakeholders have a clear understanding of the equipment and how to properly specify, purchase, and test it.”

He further adds, “The updated guidelines provide industry professionals with consistent and comprehensive information, along with user-friendly tools such as forms and checklists to ensure adherence to best practices.”

By offering detailed guidance and practical resources, OCIMF aims to enhance safety and efficiency in the procurement and utilization of SPM hawsers within the marine industry.
