The Panama Canal Authority Launches Low-Carbon Transit Slot for Neopanamax Vessels
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is taking a significant step towards promoting sustainability in maritime transportation by introducing a dedicated low-carbon transit slot for neopanamax vessels. This initiative aims to support and reward the green agenda of the ACP’s clients while encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly practices in the shipping industry.
Commencing on October 5, a weekly transit slot will be reserved exclusively for neopanamax vessels that meet specific low-carbon emission requirements. Unlike previous offerings, this slot will not be available through an auction but will be awarded through a competition held 30 days before the transit date.
The first phase of the NetZero Slot will cater to ships equipped with dual-fuel engines that utilize fuel with a carbon intensity of less than 75 gCO2(e)/MJ from extraction to combustion. In 2026, a second phase will be introduced, which will require vessels to submit a technology screening report evaluating energy-efficient technologies applicable to the vessel.
Priority in the competition will be given to laden vessels and those with a larger Panama Canal Universal Measurement System (PCUMS) capacity. The winning vessel will enjoy the flexibility to choose their transit date within the designated week, a guaranteed transit time of 24 hours, and just-in-time service.
Ilya Espino de Marotta, the Panama Canal’s deputy administrator and sustainability officer, emphasized the importance of incentivizing investments in vessels capable of using low-carbon fuels and energy-efficient technologies. This initiative not only recognizes and rewards clients leading the transition towards a more sustainable future but also contributes to global decarbonization goals.
