CMA CGM and ABB Collaborate on Parametric Roll Algorithm for Ship Safety

Marseille-headquartered shipping giant CMA CGM and Swedish-Swiss technology company ABB have teamed up to develop a parametric roll algorithm that would improve safety on ships.

ABB and CMA CGM have joined forces to integrate a theoretical framework created by CMA CGM into ABB’s ABB Ability OCTOPUS Marine Advisory system. This collaboration aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency by detecting and preventing extreme parametric rolling, ultimately reducing the risks of cargo damage and loss at sea.

ABB will be responsible for installing the OCTOPUS onboard system, providing engineering services, project management, and commissioning. The solution will be implemented across CMA CGM’s global fleet, with comprehensive training services offered to users of the system.

The system will enable real-time monitoring and response, improving voyage efficiency and minimizing unplanned downtime caused by adverse weather conditions.

Parametric rolling presents a severe and challenging obstacle, making this partnership a significant advancement in sustainable marine technologies. According to a 2023 report by Japan’s classification society ClassNK, parametric rolling occurs suddenly when navigating in certain sea states, particularly affecting containerships, ro-pax vessels, and car carriers.

Preventing parametric rolling can help avoid costly repairs and cargo damage, emphasizing the importance of safety and sustainability in the maritime sector. Tomas Arhippainen, Head of Marine Service and Digital at ABB Marine & Ports, stated, “Our partnership with CMA CGM on the parametric roll algorithm underscores our commitment to improving vessel safety, operational efficiency, and environmental protection.”

ABB has already equipped approximately 200 CMA CGM ships with the OCTOPUS system, showcasing its dedication to enhancing maritime operations. In a recent development, ABB secured an order from AAL Shipping for its Super B-Class heavy-lift vessels in February 2025.
