Dutch Vessel Fugro Mercator Safely Towed After Running Aground in Italy

Dutch geological data specialist Fugro has successfully towed its Fugro Mercator vessel to a shipyard for inspection after it ran aground off the north coast of Elba, Italy on March 22. The 42-meter long geophysical survey vessel experienced no injuries to crew members and no harm to the environment during the incident, for which Fugro is grateful for the limited impact.

The vessel will undergo a thorough inspection at the shipyard, and Fugro will conduct a comprehensive review to determine the cause of the grounding. Erik-Jan Bijvank, Group Director Europe & Africa, expressed gratitude to the Italian coastguard and partners for their prompt response in evacuating the crew and salvaging the Fugro Mercator.

The Fugro Mercator was engaged in survey work for the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) as part of the Italian government’s Marine Ecosystem Restoration (MER) Project. Fugro is collaborating with the client to ensure the continuation of the work as soon as possible.

To minimize the overall impact of the incident, the Fugro Helmert will soon sail to the Mediterranean to fulfill the Mercator’s project commitments. Fugro remains committed to prioritizing the safety of its crew and the protection of the environment in all its operations.
