G-TEC Completes Seabed Survey for Doordewind Wind Farm Zone

G-TEC, a Belgian geophysical survey specialist, has successfully completed a seabed survey in the Doordewind Wind Farm Zone (DDWWFZ) under a contract with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) in 2024.

The offshore survey was conducted using G-TEC’s survey vessels Mainport GEO and Karina, equipped with advanced technology including a multibeam echosounder (MBES), side-scan sonar (SSS), sub-bottom profiler (SBP), and magnetometry (MAG). The company acquired, processed, and delivered high-quality geophysical data essential for the Integrated Ground Model of the offshore wind farm zone.

RVO has contracted Fraunhofer IWES, in collaboration with Tetra Tech RPS Energy and Geowynd, to develop the Integrated Ground Model (IGM) for DDWWFZ using the data collected by G-TEC. This comprehensive approach aims to derisk the development path for offshore wind farms in the Netherlands.

“By preparing an extensive package of site data, RVO derisks the path for development of Offshore Wind Farms in the Netherlands,” stated Hugo Swane, Project Manager at RVO.

The Doordewind wind farm zone, situated 77 kilometers off the north coast of the Netherlands, is set to become home to the first offshore wind farm connecting to Eemshaven. With a total area of 580 square kilometers, the wind farm is planned to support a 4 GW installed offshore wind capacity across two sites, Doordewind I and Doordewind II.

Doordewind I is scheduled for auction in 2027, with commissioning expected in 2032. The seabed data collected by G-TEC will be crucial for geotechnical investigations at Doordewind and for constructing the Integrated Ground Model, facilitating the development of offshore wind energy in the region.
