The Future of Offshore Support Vessels: DOF OSV Sea Dragon

DOF OSV is being built to a design by MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting Ltd.

Exciting developments are underway at the Crist shipyard in Poland, where construction is in progress for the cutting-edge offshore support vessel (OSV) known as the Sea Dragon. This impressive vessel is being built to assist operations off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The 110-meter OSV will be powered by six MAN 12V175D variable speed gensets and will feature a full propulsion scope from Rauma, Finland-based Steerprop, ensuring optimal performance in challenging marine environments.

Kongsberg Maritime has recently secured a contract to supply an integrated package of equipment for the Sea Dragon, including the DC main switchboard, battery hybrid system, main power generator, thruster induction motor, and distribution transformer. The incorporation of a DC electric system offers numerous advantages such as enhanced energy efficiency, reduced space and weight requirements, improved power quality, and better dynamic response.

The innovative battery-hybrid propulsion system of the Sea Dragon will consist of two 1 MWh battery packs, complemented by a state-of-the-art DC electric system designed to maximize operational efficiency. These advancements are projected to result in fuel savings of up to 35% compared to similar vessels, highlighting the vessel’s commitment to sustainable maritime technology.

In addition to its cutting-edge propulsion system, DOF has selected a range of Kongsberg Maritime technology to support its offshore operations, including navigation, automation, control systems, and the renowned K-Pos Dynamic Positioning system, ensuring optimal performance and safety during operations.
