Stena Line Unveils Revolutionary Roro Vessel Design: Introducing the Stena Futuro

Stena Line has revealed a groundbreaking new concept roro vessel design known as the Stena Futuro. This innovative ship is set to revolutionize the maritime industry by significantly reducing energy consumption, with claims of at least a 20% decrease.

Nicolas Bathfield, project manager at Stena Teknik, shared, “The mission is to develop the most efficient and competitive vessel possible for a specific cargo capacity, utilizing today’s available technology. The ultimate goal is for the vessel to achieve the lowest fuel consumption in the market.”

The Stena Futuro, measuring 240 meters in length, will feature hybrid propulsion, batteries, and engines designed for low fuel consumption that can operate on various fuels. Additionally, solar panels will contribute to the ship’s electricity requirements. The hull will be equipped with an air lubrication system, releasing small air bubbles beneath the waterline to reduce friction between the vessel and the water. Furthermore, a waste heat recovery system will enable the reuse of hot exhaust gases from the engines for onboard heating and electric power generation.

One of the standout features of the Stena Futuro is the inclusion of four 40-meter-tall retractable wing sails, enhancing the vessel’s efficiency and sustainability.

CEO of Stena Line, Niclas Mårtensson, expressed the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, stating, “We aim to lead our industry in achieving global climate goals. The Stena Futuro concept represents a significant step in that direction, as we strive to develop tomorrow’s vessels that are both environmentally friendly and technologically advanced.”
