MOL Completes Biofuel Bunkering on Capesize Bulk Carrier, Midnight Dream

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has achieved a significant milestone by conducting a biodiesel-blended marine fuel (biofuel) bunkering operation on its capsize bulk carrier, Midnight Dream. This marks the first biofuel utilization for MOL in collaboration with BHP Group on a capesize bulk carrier, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

The bunkering took place in March 2025 in Singapore, where the vessel was supplied with approximately 1,000 tons of biofuel. Biofuel, derived from organic resources of biological origin such as agricultural residues and waste cooking oil, offers a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

The biofuel used in this operation is a blend of about 24% biodiesel (B24) with Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). This blend is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 750 tons, contributing to environmental sustainability and mitigating the vessel’s carbon footprint.

One of the key advantages of biofuel is its compatibility with existing marine diesel engines and bunkering facilities. This seamless integration allows for a smooth transition to sustainable fuel sources without the need for extensive modifications or infrastructure upgrades.

By opting for biofuel, MOL is taking proactive steps towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting eco-friendly shipping practices. The successful bunkering on Midnight Dream demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of biofuels in the maritime industry.
