The European Union Takes Action to Clamp Down on Plastic Pellet Shipping

The European Union has announced new regulations aimed at reducing the shipping of plastic pellets, also known as nurdles, which are a major source of microplastic pollution in the oceans. The EU’s measures are designed to ensure that plastic pellets are transported in a responsible manner, with a focus on preventing spills and minimizing environmental impact.

Under the new rules, shipping companies will be required to adhere to strict guidelines for packaging and handling plastic pellets. These guidelines, based on the recommendations of the International Maritime Organization, include measures to prevent pellet spills, contain spills if they occur, and clean up any lost pellets. The EU aims to achieve a zero pellet loss objective and will enforce the use of appropriate packaging, equipment, training, and infrastructure to prevent environmental damage.

Plastic production pellets are small in size, around 5 mm, but their impact on the environment is significant. They are a key component of all plastic products and are a major source of microplastic pollution in the EU. The new regulations mark a significant step forward in addressing this issue and reflect the EU’s commitment to reducing plastic pollution in the oceans.

Paulina Hennig-Kloska, the Polish minister for climate and environment, commented on the importance of these measures, stating, “Microplastics, including plastic pellets, are a pervasive problem that affects our oceans, seas, and even our food supply. The EU’s actions to tackle pellet pollution in maritime transport are a crucial step towards protecting our environment and reducing plastic waste.”
