MHI, SBM to Study Application of CO2 Capture Modules for Petrobras’ FPSOs

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and SBM Offshore to Study CO2 Capture Modules for FPSOs

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Single Buoy Moorings, a subsidiary of SBM Offshore, have recently announced a collaborative effort to conduct a study on the application of CO2 capture modules on future floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs) for Petrobras.

The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility of implementing CO2 capture solutions on FPSOs, with a particular focus on the module design that combines MHI’s Advanced KM CDR Process CO2 capture technology and SBM’s Fast4Ward principles.

Specifically, the study will target the capture of CO2 emissions from onboard gas turbines, with detailed analysis and evaluation to be conducted in preparation for potential commercialization in the future.

This collaboration marks the first milestone in the partnership agreement between MHI and SBM, which was established in September 2023. The agreement was forged in response to the growing demand for decarbonization solutions and aims to accelerate the development of CO2 capture technologies for FPSOs to support global efforts towards carbon neutrality.

By leveraging MHI’s expertise in CO2 capture technology and SBM’s innovative principles, the study aims to pave the way for more sustainable and environmentally friendly operations in the offshore oil and gas industry.

As the demand for cleaner energy solutions continues to rise, partnerships like the one between MHI and SBM Offshore are crucial in driving innovation and progress towards a more sustainable future.
