Australia’s Woodside Energy in Talks with Germany’s Uniper for LNG Supply Deal

Australia’s energy giant Woodside Energy is currently in discussions with Germany’s Uniper regarding a potential liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply deal. While the talks are ongoing, both parties have not yet reached a final agreement on the terms.

In a previous agreement signed in September 2022, Woodside and Uniper agreed to a flexible long-term sale and purchase agreement (SPA) for LNG supply from Woodside’s global portfolio into Europe, including Germany. The agreement is set to last until 2039, with deliveries expected to commence in January 2023.

The deal includes the supply of up to twelve cargoes per year, totaling more than 0.8 million tons per annum or one billion cubic meters of natural gas. However, the supply starting from September 2031 is contingent upon Uniper finalizing its long-term strategic capacity bookings in Northwest Europe by March 2023.

Woodside’s confirmation of discussions with Uniper comes shortly after the company announced a deal with Stonepeak to sell a stake in its Louisiana LNG development on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
