FarSounder Introduces Citizen Science Feature in Latest Software Update

FarSounder has recently unveiled a new citizen science feature in its latest SonaSoft™ software update. This innovative addition allows users to report whale sightings and floating trash/debris, furthering the integration of marine conservation into everyday navigation for Argos users.

Contributing to Global Seabed Mapping

Since 2019, vessels equipped with FarSounder’s Argos sonars have been able to participate in citizen science by contributing to global seabed mapping. Through the anonymized sharing of Local History Map (LHM) data, Argos users have been supporting initiatives such as Seabed 2030 and the IHO’s crowd-sourced bathymetry database.

Reporting Whale Sightings and Marine Debris

With the new feature, users can easily log observations of whales or trash/debris via a simple pop-up box. Each sighting is automatically geotagged and timestamped before being securely uploaded and anonymized. FarSounder shares this valuable data with trusted partners like Whale Alert, Ocean Wise, and Eyesea for further analysis and action.

Protecting the Oceans through Navigation

FarSounder CEO, Matthew Zimmerman, expressed excitement about the new feature, stating, “Our customers are already navigating smarter. Now they’re helping protect the oceans while they do it. This new feature gives mariners a simple way to support important conservation work around the world.”

This enhanced environmental awareness transforms Argos-equipped vessels into powerful tools for ocean protection, aligning with FarSounder’s commitment to sustainability. By actively monitoring marine pollution and wildlife, these vessels play a crucial role in safeguarding our oceans.
