Germany’s Wilhelmshaven 1 LNG Terminal to Reopen After Repair Work

After completing scheduled repair work on the superstructure of the jetty at its transhipment facility, Germany’s Wilhelmshaven 1 liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal is set to reopen shortly. Operator DET announced the completion of the repair work on its website last week.

The regasification ship Hoegh Esperanza, which waited nearby during the four days of maintenance work, has returned to its mooring as of April 26. According to Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH, the Esperanza will soon be connected to the superstructure to receive the next delivery from an LNG tanker, regasify it, and feed it into the German gas grid.

Lower Saxony’s port operator conducted digging at the site to ensure the necessary water depth for operations. Another regasification ship, named Excelsior, is expected to arrive at Wilhelmshaven on Monday, providing the terminal with a second LNG import option, as announced by DET on Friday.

DET charters ships at LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbuettel, and Stade, which were commissioned by the German government in 2022 during Europe’s energy crisis.

With these developments, the reopening of Wilhelmshaven 1 LNG terminal signifies a significant step towards ensuring Germany’s energy security and meeting its gas supply demands.
