Mocean Energy Advances Blue Horizon Project in EuropeWave Phase 3 Program

Scottish wave energy company Mocean Energy continues to make significant progress with its Blue Horizon project as part of the EuropeWave Phase 3 program. The project is currently undergoing detailed design work, final testing, and preparations for manufacturing and offshore deployment.

EuropeWave reports that Mocean Energy is focusing on advancing the detailed design of the wave energy converter (WEC) hull and the Vernier hybrid machine (VHM). This phase builds upon previous analyses and test results to ensure the system can withstand offshore conditions before deployment at sea.

Recently, the final round of tank testing was completed in mid-February. These tests aim to validate performance and design assumptions under controlled conditions. The results will help refine the final design before moving on to full-scale manufacturing.

Manufacturing trials for the VHM began in March to validate assembly processes, component integration, and material performance. This phase helps de-risk the fabrication process and ensure the technology’s readiness for deployment.

Mocean Energy has also secured a berth reservation at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, UK, for offshore testing. This reservation marks a significant step towards the full-scale demonstration of the technology, according to EuropeWave.

“These milestones demonstrate steady progress toward the realization of a robust and scalable wave energy solution. Further updates will follow as the project advances through manufacturing and offshore deployment preparations,” EuropeWave stated.

In December 2024, Mocean Energy secured additional commercial work and a grant from Wave Energy Scotland (WES). The company received £140,000 for further development of a novel direct drive generator for wave energy technology, along with a £1.2 million grant to support their initiatives.
