Tragedy Strikes as Tour Boats Capsize on Liuchong River in China

Three individuals have tragically lost their lives, while 14 others remain missing following a devastating incident on the Liuchong River in Guizhou Province, China. The catastrophe unfolded when two tour boats capsized on the Dongfeng Reservoir, located near Xinrenxiang, Qianxi County, during a sightseeing excursion on May 4. The region’s picturesque canyon walls attract numerous tourists, with the vessels filled with vacationers enjoying China’s May Day holiday.

An eyewitness described the initial moments as normal before a sudden squall struck the area around 4:40 PM, bringing heavy rain, thunder, and strong winds. The adverse weather conditions quickly escalated, causing severe turbulence on the water’s surface. Visibility plummeted to less than a meter as massive waves and fierce winds engulfed the boats, resulting in the capsizing of two vessels and plunging approximately 70 passengers into the treacherous waters.

Swift response efforts from local authorities and courageous bystanders led to the successful rescue of 60 individuals, but concerns linger for the whereabouts of 14 individuals who remain unaccounted for as of the latest reports.

The rescue operation has mobilized over 240 responders, including 80 divers equipped to scour the wreckage, bolstered by 16 underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and 24 support boats. The murky, sediment-laden water poses challenges to the search and recovery mission, underscoring the complexities of the ongoing operation.

Highlighting the frequency of maritime accidents in recent times, the Guizhou Fire Department issued a stern warning against boarding unlicensed, overloaded, or substandard vessels, especially during inclement weather conditions. The department emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and caution when embarking on water-based excursions.
