TotalEnergies Subsidiaries Apply for Environmental Permit for $16 Billion Green Hydrogen Project in Chile

Subsidiaries of energy major TotalEnergies have taken a significant step towards a groundbreaking green hydrogen and ammonia project in southern Chile. According to a recent regulatory filing, the project, spearheaded by the Chilean subsidiary TEC H2 MAG, is set to receive an environmental permit for the ambitious $16 billion initiative.

Project Overview

The project, slated to commence operations in 2030, encompasses a comprehensive infrastructure plan. This includes the development of a wind farm, seven electrolysis centers for green hydrogen production, a desalination plant, an ammonia production facility, and maritime infrastructure to facilitate shipping.

Chile’s Clean Hydrogen Initiative

Chile has been actively promoting the development of clean hydrogen projects as part of its commitment to sustainable energy solutions. However, companies have encountered challenges such as lengthy permitting processes and a lack of essential infrastructure, hindering the country’s progress in the green hydrogen sector.

Despite these obstacles, TotalEnergies and its subsidiaries remain dedicated to advancing the green hydrogen and ammonia project in Chile.

Timeline and Production Capacity

According to the project’s official website, the environmental permit application process is estimated to take two years, with construction scheduled to commence in 2027. The ammonia plant, to be commissioned in stages, is projected to produce up to 10,800 metric tons per day upon completion.

Conclusion

With TotalEnergies leading the way in green hydrogen innovation, the $16 billion project in Chile represents a significant milestone in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. By harnessing the power of renewable resources and cutting-edge technology, TotalEnergies is poised to make a lasting impact on the global energy landscape.
