The Maersk Sana Incident: Crew Members Injured, Vessel Drifting Safely

The container vessel Maersk Sana encountered unexpected challenges on April 28, 2025, while en route from Newark to Singapore. The vessel experienced “machinery-related issues” in its main engine room, leading to injuries among the crew members on board.

As a result of the incident, three crew members were affected, with two requiring urgent medical attention. The injured crew members were promptly attended to, with two of them needing to be evacuated to Bermuda for further medical treatment.

Following the incident, the 8,450-TEU vessel, which was built in 2004 and flagged in Singapore, is currently drifting safely off the coast of Bermuda. A towage vessel has been dispatched and is expected to reach the Maersk Sana within a week to provide necessary assistance.

At the time of the incident, the Maersk Sana was operating on Maersk’s Transpacific TP11 service. In response to the machinery issues, Maersk has initiated an investigation to determine the root cause of the incident. The company is also collaborating with stakeholders to minimize any disruptions in the supply chain.

Maersk emphasized the importance of safety in maritime operations, stating, “Safety is of paramount importance, and we will take the learnings from our investigation to avoid similar incidents in the future.”
