Google Partners with Shell to Extend Lifespan of Offshore Wind Farm

Google is continuing its commitment to renewable energy by entering into a groundbreaking power purchase agreement with Shell. This agreement marks the first time a corporate PPA has extended the lifespan of an offshore wind farm, specifically the Egmond aan Zee wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.

The Egmond aan Zee wind farm, which began operations in 2007, was a pioneering project as the first large-scale commercial offshore wind farm in the region. Shell acquired full ownership of the site in 2021 and, through its partnership with Google, will now be able to extend the wind farm’s lifespan by at least four years beyond its original decommissioning date.

This innovative agreement will allow Shell to pursue permit extensions and invest in necessary upgrades to ensure the continued operation of the offshore wind farm. Google’s support for over 1 gigawatt of clean energy generation capacity in the Netherlands through PPAs underscores its broader commitment to renewable energy.

Expanding Renewable Energy Portfolio in Europe

In addition to its partnership with Shell for the Egmond aan Zee wind farm, Google has been actively expanding its renewable energy portfolio in Europe. The tech giant recently added over 700 MW of renewable energy agreements in countries such as Belgium, Italy, and Poland.

Google’s agreements with Eneco and other joint ventures will support the development of new offshore wind farms, further increasing its carbon-free energy capacity in the region. This investment in clean energy reflects Google’s dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Global Commitment to Renewable Energy

Google’s efforts to support renewable energy extend beyond Europe, with the tech company recently signing its first power purchase agreement for offshore wind energy in Taiwan and the Asia Pacific region. The agreement with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners for the Fengmiao I offshore wind project demonstrates Google’s global commitment to renewable energy.
