Benchmarking on Decarbonization Finds Progress and Areas for Improvement

The Getting to Zero Coalition Releases First Benchmarking Report

The maritime industry is undergoing a significant transformation towards decarbonization, with the Getting to Zero Coalition leading the way. Recently, the non-profit organization unveiled its first benchmarking report, shedding light on the collective efforts of its 200+ members to tackle the challenges of reducing emissions and promoting sustainable practices.

Established in 2019, the Coalition comprises industry leaders, governments, and NGOs working together to drive change. The benchmarking report, based on responses from 76 companies, identifies key trends and areas for improvement as the industry navigates towards a cleaner future.

Challenges and Progress

The report highlights several challenges faced by the industry, including uncertainties around future regulations, fuel pathways, and supply chain logistics for zero-emission fuels. Despite these challenges, members of the Coalition are making strides in promoting enabling conditions, setting targets, advocating for policies, and enhancing emissions transparency.

However, the report notes that progress in initiatives like green premium offerings and green shipping corridors remains limited. While companies are exploring these concepts, more concerted efforts are needed to drive meaningful change and accelerate the transition to sustainable practices.

Areas of Focus

The benchmarking report categorizes progress into five key areas, with creating enabling conditions leading the pack at 58%, followed by incentives and market-making at 42%. Efforts in first-mover projects, transitional investments, and zero-emission shipping deployment scored between 23-26%, indicating room for improvement.

Recommendations for the industry include long-term transition planning, knowledge sharing, and innovative commercial arrangements to spread costs and risks. Governments are urged to strengthen international regulations, implement incentives, and invest in infrastructure, particularly in hydrogen strategies.

The Getting to Zero Coalition’s 2025 report, available online, serves as a roadmap for shaping policy, incentivizing industry action, and driving sustainable practices. With year-on-year data, a clearer picture will emerge, guiding stakeholders towards a greener future for the maritime industry.

As the industry continues its journey towards decarbonization, collaboration, innovation, and decisive action will be key to achieving the Coalition’s vision of zero-emission shipping. By leveraging best practices, embracing long-term planning, and advocating for supportive policies, the maritime sector can lead the way towards a sustainable future.
