Uruguay’s Ancap to Launch Bidding Round for Natural Hydrogen Exploration

Uruguay’s state-run energy firm, Ancap, has announced plans to initiate a bidding round for natural hydrogen exploration and development by the end of this year. The firm anticipates receiving offers for this initiative in 2026, as disclosed by executives during a conference in Houston.

Additionally, Ancap is contemplating a bidding round for carbon capture investment, which could potentially be launched in 2027. The geological composition of Uruguay makes it a promising region for natural hydrogen exploration, owing to the substantial presence of this element in its rocks.

While Uruguay’s government has been actively promoting green hydrogen production as part of its renewable energy agenda, it also acknowledges the potential of natural hydrogen, which is naturally produced through geological processes in the Earth’s subsurface.

Santiago Ferro, responsible for overseeing energy transition at Ancap, expressed confidence in receiving offers for both natural hydrogen and green hydrogen in 2026. He mentioned that certain contract details pertaining to the green hydrogen offshore development round announced in 2024 still needed to be finalized.

This strategic move by Ancap aligns with Uruguay’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and exploring innovative avenues for energy production. The exploration of natural hydrogen holds significant promise for the country’s energy sector, offering a unique opportunity to harness its geological resources for enhanced energy security and sustainability.

As Uruguay continues to position itself as a key player in the renewable energy landscape, initiatives like the upcoming bidding round for natural hydrogen underscore the nation’s dedication to fostering technological advancements and environmental stewardship in the energy industry.
