Malta Emerges as Europe’s Largest Ship Registry with Over 10,000 Registrations

Malta has solidified its position as the largest ship registry in Europe, surpassing 10,000 ship registrations by the end of the first quarter of this year. According to the Transport Ministry, Malta now ranks as the 6th largest ship registry globally and holds the top spot for superyachts.

The Transport Ministry has announced plans to enhance and streamline the registration process by implementing a digital system. Starting June 1, 2025, Transport Malta will issue electronic certificates to ship and yacht owners with vessels registered under the Maltese Flag.

Chris Bonett, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, emphasized that this digital transformation will bolster Malta’s competitiveness in the maritime sector, where efficiency and transparency are paramount.

Transport Malta’s Chief Executive Officer, Kurt Farrugia, highlighted that this initiative builds upon the successful introduction of e-certificates for seafarers in 2021. To date, over 93,000 digital documents have been issued, underscoring Malta’s commitment to digital innovation.

Factors Contributing to Malta’s Maritime Success

Malta’s emergence as a maritime powerhouse can be attributed to various factors. The country’s strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean, coupled with its natural harbours, positions it as a preferred destination for maritime activities.

Furthermore, Malta offers a comprehensive range of maritime services, including shipbuilding, maintenance, repairs, bunkering, ship supplies, and towage. Additionally, the country’s favorable tax regime has attracted shipowners and operators seeking cost-effective solutions.

Moreover, Malta’s recognition as a key port of entry into the European Union has bolstered its appeal among international shipping companies looking to access EU markets seamlessly.
