Kairos Joins Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime Pool as Compliance Generator
Kairos, an LNG bunker vessel chartered by Nordic energy company Gasum, will run on waste-based bio-LNG and join Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool as a compliance generator.
Gasum has collaborated with the ship owner, Bernard Schulte, to power the 7,500 cubic meter vessel with renewable bio-LNG in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint and offer compliance services to Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pooling customers.
Pooling is considered the most convenient and reliable method for shipping companies to cut down on compliance costs while also supporting the production of low-emission fuels.
As both the charterer of the vessel and the producer/distributor of bio-LNG, Gasum can ensure substantial emission reductions to the pool. The company manages the pool, supplies ultra-low emission bio-LNG, and provides over-compliance options to shipping companies with vessels that fall short of compliance standards.
“This step makes it even simpler for us to ensure the needed emission reductions to our pool at all times. According to expert estimates, there will be much more compliance deficit than there is surplus on offer by the end of 2025, which makes this all the more crucial,” stated Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime, Gasum.
“We are very pleased that Gasum, as the charterer, has opted for bio-LNG usage, further reducing the carbon footprint of ‘Kairos’. Joint efforts and solutions are essential to decarbonize shipping,” added Christian Breuel, Managing Director Tankers, Bernhard Schulte.
Since January 1, 2025, FuelEU Maritime has mandated vessel owners to decrease the carbon intensity of purchased fuel by two percent initially, with the required reduction progressively increasing to as much as 80% by 2050.
To facilitate compliance for shipping companies, FuelEU Maritime allows the voluntary pooling of emission reductions between vessels. This means that vessels exceeding compliance standards can offset emissions on behalf of vessels that do not meet the requirements, essentially offering compliance as a service.
