Yinson Production’s FPSO Agogo Set to Reach Angolan Waters with Carbon Capture Technology

Malaysia’s Yinson Production, a subsidiary of Kuala Lumpur-based energy infrastructure and technology company Yinson, is making waves with its innovative approach to decarbonizing operations in the oil and gas industry. The company has confirmed a brief stopover in Namibia before its Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, the Agogo, is scheduled to reach Angolan waters in mid-May 2025.

The FPSO Agogo, boasting a production capacity of 120,000 barrels of oil per day, is equipped with cutting-edge carbon-reduction technologies. Notably, it features the industry’s first pilot post-combustion carbon capture system on an FPSO.

Operated by Yinson Production for Azule Energy, the FPSO Agogo is gearing up to commence operations in the second half of 2025 at the Agogo Integrated West Hub development project in Block 15/06 offshore Angola. The vessel has secured a 15-year firm charter with the option to extend for another five years, amounting to a total contract value of up to approximately $5.3 billion.

During the planned technical stop at Walvis Bay in Namibia on May 8, 2025, the FPSO will replenish stores and facilitate crew changes as part of its journey to Angola.

Leading the Way in Carbon Reduction

The FPSO Agogo is equipped with a closed flare system, hydrocarbon blanketing, combined cycle technology, automated process controls, and all-electric drives. These features align with Yinson Production’s ambitious sustainability goals, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050. The carbon-reducing technologies onboard the FPSO are expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Yinson Production’s commitment to decarbonization is further underscored by its strategic investments in carbon capture technology. The company acquired the Norway-based Stella Maris CCS business and made a strategic investment in Ionada, recognizing the potential of carbon capture as a key tool to decarbonize FPSO operations.

Future Prospects in Angola

The Agogo Integrated West Hub project aims to develop two discoveries in Block 15/06, Agogo and Ndungu. This deepwater greenfield development, located west of the active FPSO N’Goma (West Hub), holds promise for expanding Yinson Production’s footprint in the region.

As the FPSO Agogo embarks on its journey to Angola, Per Dyberg, Project Director of Yinson Production, expressed pride in the successful transit of the vessel through Walvis Bay. He emphasized the importance of African ports in facilitating large-scale energy infrastructure projects and the technical complexity inherent in modern energy initiatives.
