Damen Shiprepair has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Alfa Laval Benelux to enhance their cooperation on energy efficiency within the maritime sector.

Together, the two companies aim to assist shipowners in transitioning to lower-carbon operations. This extended collaboration will focus on identifying sustainability enhancement opportunities during the quotation and project phases of ship maintenance and refitting.

The partnership intends to leverage Damen’s expertise in ship repair and Alfa Laval’s advanced energy-saving technologies to integrate decarbonisation upgrades into routine drydocking processes.

Alfa Laval Benelux marine division head David van Luijtelaar said: “This partnership allows us to deliver a suite of innovative solutions and technologies to help shipowners reduce emissions, adopt energy-saving measures, and meet environmental requirements – all through a trusted shipyard partner that shares our commitment to sustainable progress.”

Additionally, the agreement includes plans for joint customer engagements and collaborative events, including a sustainability-themed day scheduled for Alfa Laval Marine Days in September.

The partnership is built on a shared customer base, which is expected to facilitate significant outcomes, according to Damen. It is part of Damen’s strategy to collaborate closely with clients and partners and offer practical solutions to the industry’s challenges.

Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam Sustainability sales manager Michele Rivella said: “Together, we can help owners take real steps towards IMO and EU sustainability targets. By integrating Alfa Laval’s solutions into our existing workflow, we create a smooth, efficient path for clients to make meaningful changes, without needing extra downtime.”

Recently, Damen Shipyards Group completed a retrofit project for four bulk carriers for BAM Shipping, in partnership with Atal Solutions and others. The project aimed to reduce water resistance, optimise power consumption, enhance propulsion systems, lower emissions, and improve lubrication systems.
