Israel Bombs Two Houthi-Controlled Ports and Warns of More Actions

Israeli Defense Force Strikes Houthi Ports in Yemen

The Israel Defense Force late on Friday, May 16, launched two powerful attacks on the Houthi-controlled ports of Hodeidah and Al-Salif, stating their belief that the ports would be out of commission for months. The Israelis also issued a warning of further attacks if the Houthi continue their missile and drone launches. Israel emphasized their past success in targeting terrorist leaders.

Initial reports suggest that there were ten strikes split between the two ports. The IDF confirmed the strikes, with unverified reports indicating the use of 10 to 15 fighter jets and over 35 munitions dropped.

The IDF described the ports as “severely damaged,” stating that the strikes were more deliberate and central compared to previous U.S. strikes. They targeted the ports specifically due to their use in transferring weapons and vowed to prevent any hostile activities in the area.

The Houthis swiftly responded, threatening a “painful response” to the bombing of the ports. They reported casualties, including deaths and injuries in both Hodeidah and Al-Salif. They claimed that vital civilian facilities and infrastructure were targeted.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel was quoted as saying, “Our pilots have successfully struck two Houthi terrorist ports, and this is just the beginning. There will be more to come.” He emphasized Israel’s stance against allowing harm from the Houthis and mentioned previous successful strikes on terror leaders.

The strikes followed repeated drone and missile attacks by the Houthis against Israel, prompting warnings from the IDF to evacuate the port areas. The timing of the strikes, after Donald Trump’s departure from the Middle East, indicates a strategic decision by Israel.

The bombing of the ports coincided with the Houthis’ regular protest marches in Sanaa in support of Gaza and the Palestinians. Israel’s actions signal a proactive stance against threats to its security.
