LS Eco Advanced Cables Launches Public Consultation for £923 Million Facility at Port of Tyne

LS Eco Advanced Cables (LSEAC), a joint venture between Global InterConnection Group (GIG) and LS Group, a Korean cable manufacturer, has initiated a five-week public consultation on its plans for a groundbreaking subsea and onshore cable facility at the Port of Tyne in the UK.

The project, set to be located at Tyne Dock, aims to create 500 direct jobs and an additional 1,000 in the supply chain. The complex will feature various buildings, including manufacturing spaces, testing facilities, and offices, centered around a 202-meter cable sheathing tower.

While the project details are still being finalized, the total investment is estimated to be around £923 million (approximately €1 billion).

“In the midst of the UK’s accelerated efforts towards decarbonizing its energy sources, there is a critical need for the infrastructure supporting this transition,” stated Sangdon Lee, Director at LSEAC.

“As a joint venture, we are excited to propose this subsea cable development facility, emphasizing the importance of community engagement. We highly value the feedback from the local area during this consultation period to shape the future of this project.”

LSEAC’s consultation will run from May 14 to June 18, encouraging input from local communities, businesses, and organizations before the final planning application submission to South Tyneside Council later this year. Additionally, two consultation events are scheduled in South and North Shields on May 27 and 28.

Collaborating with the North East Combined Authority and the Port of Tyne, the joint venture plans to work with schools, colleges, and universities in the region to provide training in the necessary skills for the facility.

“This substantial investment will not only create over 500 direct jobs but also stimulate the growth of the supply chain, generating numerous additional employment opportunities in the thriving offshore sector,” affirmed North East Mayor Kim McGuinness.

“It will establish a new industrial landmark, symbolizing our global ambitions and standing alongside the historic Swan Hunter cranes that once dominated the Tyne skyline. This project signifies a major advancement for the region, showcasing our commitment to green energy and our readiness to engage in international business.”

Initial discussions about the factory began in September 2024 when LSEAC and the Port of Tyne signed a head of terms for a lease option.
