The National Ocean Industries Association Responds to Revised Gulf of America Biological Opinion

The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) released a statement from President Erik Milito in regards to the revised Gulf of America Biological Opinion issued by the Trump administration. The updated opinion has sparked discussions and concerns within the industry.

Commitment to Scientific Rigor and Regulatory Balance

NOIA appreciates the Trump administration’s efforts to enhance the Biological Opinion, acknowledging that the original document was developed through a flawed and opaque process. The administration’s willingness to revisit and revise the opinion showcases a dedication to restoring scientific rigor and regulatory balance in environmental decision-making.

Concerns Over Jeopardy Finding

One of the key concerns raised by NOIA is the inclusion of a jeopardy finding for the Rice’s whale in the revised Biological Opinion. The organization believes that this determination may not align with the best available science and could lead to unnecessary regulatory uncertainty in the Gulf of America.

Environmental Stewardship and Energy Production

NOIA emphasizes the importance of the Gulf of America as an environmentally responsible and economically critical offshore energy hub. The region supports numerous American jobs, generates significant revenue for conservation and coastal restoration efforts, and produces low-carbon intensity oil on a global scale.

Furthermore, NOIA highlights the interconnected nature of environmental stewardship and energy production in the Gulf of America. The industry demonstrates that both can coexist harmoniously, with responsible energy practices supporting environmental conservation efforts.

Building a Foundation for Policies

NOIA stresses the need for the Biological Opinion to serve as a foundation for future policies rather than a final endpoint. The organization aims to work with the administration and Congress to ensure that policies are grounded in science, transparent in process, and aligned with America’s offshore energy and environmental leadership.

As discussions around the revised Gulf of America Biological Opinion continue, NOIA remains committed to advocating for policies that support a balanced approach to environmental protection and offshore energy production.
