Danish Shipping Giant Norden Collaborates with Microsoft to Reduce Maritime Supply Chain Emissions

Danish shipping giant Norden has initiated a pilot project in partnership with global technology company Microsoft to tackle the issue of reducing emissions in its maritime supply chain.

The pilot project focuses on the utilization of Norden’s biofuel voyage and Book and Claim solution, aimed at decreasing carbon emissions associated with maritime transportation.

Norden’s book and claim solution allows companies reliant on maritime shipping to benefit from emissions reductions achieved through low-carbon fuels, irrespective of fuel availability in different regions.

During the pilot project, Norden utilized certified waste-based biofuel on multiple voyages, resulting in an impressive 80-90% reduction in life cycle emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. The emissions reductions were then transferred to Microsoft using Norden’s book and claim solution, providing clear transparency on the transferred reductions.

Over a span of three years, Microsoft is expected to cut its maritime Scope 3 emissions by nearly 10,000 tonnes of CO2e through this collaboration with Norden.

Furthermore, Norden and Microsoft will collaborate with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) to test enhancements to RSB’s globally recognized book and claim system. This initiative aims to ensure credible tracking of sustainable maritime fuel claims.
