Louis Dreyfus Armateurs Partners with Technip Energies to Develop Low-Carbon Ammonia Solution

Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Technip Energies to collaborate on the development of the ammonia cracking component for LDA’s innovative FRESH solution. FRESH, which stands for Floating Renewable Energy Solutions for Hydrogen, is a cutting-edge ship-based processing and storage facility designed to handle low-carbon ammonia and hydrogen.

The core of the FRESH solution is a 170-meter-long vessel with a significant storage capacity of 45,000 cubic meters for imported ammonia. This vessel is equipped with an advanced cracking plant on its deck, capable of converting the stored ammonia into hydrogen efficiently.

During operation, the FRESH vessel will be stationed at port for production activities and regularly supplied by dedicated ammonia carrier vessels. The cracking plant onboard the vessel is designed to produce gaseous hydrogen with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes at a purity level exceeding 99.9%, all while maintaining over 90% energy efficiency. The hydrogen produced is then compressed and offloaded to shore for continuous supply to industries and heavy mobility applications. Additionally, the vessel can be relocated as needed to meet varying hydrogen demand.

Technip Energies will bring its expertise in high-energy efficiency ammonia cracking technology to integrate into the FRESH solution. Meanwhile, LDA will oversee the hull design, construction, and overall vessel operations for the project.
