China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Successfully Completes Ultra-Large FPU Transport Operation

Chinese state-owned oil and gas giant China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has completed a transport operation related to an ultra-large floating production unit (FPU).

CNOOC recently achieved a significant milestone in the offshore energy sector by successfully completing the integrated float-on installation and towing operation for a 100,000-ton FPU on May 11, 2025. This groundbreaking operation is considered the world’s first of its kind.

The ultra-large FPU, constructed domestically in China, was floated and towed entirely by CNOOC, showcasing the company’s expertise and capabilities in executing complex offshore engineering projects. Support services for the operation were provided by vessels such as Haiyang Shiyou 691 and Haiyang Shiyou 681.

With its sheer weight and complexity, this project stands out as one of the most challenging and largest offshore engineering endeavors globally, underscoring CNOOC’s position as a leader in the industry.

Recent Achievements and Projects

In addition to its groundbreaking FPU transport operation, CNOOC recently made a significant discovery in the Huizhou 19-6 oilfield in the eastern South China Sea. This discovery added over a hundred million tons of proved in-place oil equivalent, further solidifying the company’s position as a key player in the region.

Furthermore, CNOOC has been actively pursuing developments abroad, as evidenced by a contract extension awarded to Wood for its Golden Eagle, Buzzard, and Scott assets in the North Sea earlier this month. This demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding its presence and operations on an international scale.

Overall, CNOOC continues to push the boundaries of innovation and excellence in the oil and gas industry, setting new standards and achieving remarkable milestones in both domestic and international projects.
