China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Begins Construction of LNG Dual-Fuel Containerships for PIL
China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has kicked off construction of 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships ordered by Singapore-based shipping company Pacific International Lines (PIL).
The steel-cutting ceremony for the first vessel in this series took place at Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai on May 19, marking the beginning of a new chapter in maritime technology.
Renewal Initiative
PIL’s order at the Chinese yard includes five 13,000 TEU containerships to be powered by LNG dual-fuel engines, showcasing the company’s commitment to fleet renewal and sustainability. The delivery of these vessels is expected to start at the end of 2026.
Technological Advancements
The new vessels will feature cutting-edge technology, including dual-fuel engines and auxiliaries that can run on both LNG and low-sulphur fuel oil. Additionally, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things will be utilized to automate tasks, enhancing operational efficiency and safety.
Collaboration and Innovation
PIL has established a site office within Hudong-Zhonghua’s new corporate headquarters to foster closer collaboration in the design and construction of the new vessels. PIL’s Chief Marine Officer, Abhishek Chawla, highlighted the importance of this partnership in modernizing the fleet and meeting customer needs.
Chawla stated, “Hudong Zhonghua’s new office is a remarkable state-of-the-art facility with advanced intelligent systems. For customers like PIL, the new facilities are a significant advantage for the execution of our vessels.”
Future Plans
In addition to the 13,000 TEU containerships, PIL has five LNG dual-fuel 9,000 TEU containerships on order at Hudong-Zhonghua, with deliveries scheduled for 2027 and 2028. The company is also expanding its fleet with the introduction of 8,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships built at the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding yard in China.
