Romania-based Damen Shipyards Galati Launches Latest Island Class Ferry for BC Ferries

On May 22, 2025, Romania-based Damen Shipyards Galati, a part of the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group, successfully launched the newest Island class ferry for Canadian ferry company BC Ferries. This ferry is the first in a series of four battery-equipped diesel-hybrid vessels that were ordered by BC Ferries in January 2024.

The newly launched ferry will operate between four coastal communities in British Columbia, connecting Nanaimo and Gabriola Island, as well as Campbell River and Quadra Island. These vessels are designed to run on electric power once the necessary charging infrastructure is in place at the terminals. With the capacity to transport up to 47 vehicles and 390 passengers, the ferries will recharge using renewable energy during passenger embarkation and disembarkation.

On the following day, May 23, Damen Shipyards Galati reached key milestones with the ninth and tenth Island class vessels. Leo Postma, Executive Director Global Sales, expressed excitement about the progress of the projects, highlighting the simultaneous milestone moments. BC Ferries’ Executive Director of Shipbuilding, Ed Hooper, emphasized the importance of the Island class vessels in modernizing the fleet to meet the needs of British Columbia residents.

Canadian Ambassador to Romania, Gavin Buchan, noted the strong partnership between Damen Shipyards Galati and Canada, with many vessels already in operation and more to come in the future. In addition to the vessels, Damen is providing onshore charging equipment to BC Ferries.

The four Island class vessels currently under construction will be delivered in two phases, with the first two expected to arrive in British Columbia in spring 2026, followed by the remaining two in the fall. All four vessels are set to be in service by 2027, contributing to BC Ferries’ efforts to reduce emissions and improve inter-island connectivity.

The Island class vessels are designed for full electric operation once the terminal infrastructure is in place. BC Ferries is collaborating with BC Hydro to install shore-based rapid charging infrastructure, with the Nanaimo Harbour terminal expected to be electrified by summer 2026. The remaining terminals are projected to be electrified by early 2027.

Conclusion

The Island class ferry launch marks a significant step towards sustainable transportation in British Columbia, with Damen Shipyards Galati playing a crucial role in delivering eco-friendly vessels to BC Ferries. With a focus on reducing emissions and enhancing connectivity, these battery-equipped diesel-hybrid ferries are set to revolutionize the ferry service in the region.
