Inyanga Marine Energy Group Awards Fabrication Contract to Hutchinson Engineering for HydroWing Tidal Energy Device

Inyanga Marine Energy Group has recently awarded the fabrication contract for its HydroWing tidal energy device to Hutchinson Engineering.

The HydroWing tidal energy array, with a capacity of 20 MW, is set to be deployed at Morlais off Anglesey in Wales, marking one of the largest consented tidal energy projects in Europe.

Under the contract, Hutchinson Engineering will be responsible for fabricating the foundation frame and the rear nacelle of the device. This includes welding, painting, and coating to ensure durability in the harsh underwater environment. The foundation frame, weighing 120 tons, will generate 1.2 MW of energy from a single unit, while the 19-meter-high nacelle is designed for optimal performance.

Constructed using structural steel, the foundation frame boasts a 25-year lifespan and is manufactured with sustainability in mind, including considerations for decommissioning at the end of its operational life.

Initial construction of the foundation frame will take place at Hutchinson Engineering’s factory in Cheshire, with final assembly set to occur quayside in Wales. The tidal energy prototype is scheduled for deployment in the first quarter of 2026.

Recently, the Welsh Government announced a £2 million equity investment in Inyanga Marine Energy Group, further supporting the company’s endeavors. Inyanga Marine Energy Group is also advancing projects in France, Southeast Asia, and Canada, showcasing its commitment to sustainable marine energy solutions on a global scale.
