Steerprop Introduces SP 45 R, Its Largest Retractable Thruster for Offshore Vessels

Steerprop, a leading manufacturer of propulsion systems, has recently unveiled its latest innovation in the form of the SP 45 R retractable thruster. This new addition to the company’s product line is specifically designed for offshore vessels and workboats that require high-performance station-keeping and thrust boost capabilities.

One of the key features of the SP 45 R is its innovative sealing and locking mechanisms, which have been identified as common weak points in traditional retractable thruster designs. By addressing these issues, Steerprop aims to minimize downtime, reduce maintenance demands, and optimize onboard space utilization.

The patent-pending seal design of the SP 45 R actively manages water ingress, ensuring minimal downtime and low maintenance requirements. Additionally, a floating housing moves with the stern tube to maintain contact with the seals even at high speeds and sea states. A simple scraping solution is also incorporated to prevent marine growth on the stern tube, a common cause of seal damage.

Another standout feature of the SP 45 R is its hydraulic locking and lifting mechanism, which enhances reliability and conserves deck space. This compact solution fits entirely below the main deck of most standard vessel designs, allowing for maximum utilization of onboard space for the vessel’s primary mission.

Furthermore, the fixed-pitch propulsion concept of the SP 45 R reduces maintenance demands while delivering the high propulsion performance that Steerprop is known for. The thruster is available in L-drive, permanent magnet, or induction electric motor configurations, catering to a wide range of vessel power requirements. Electric steering gear ensures precision for dynamic positioning, while power and propeller size can be customized to suit specific application needs within a power range of 900 to 4,000 kW.

With the introduction of the SP 45 R retractable thruster, Steerprop continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the maritime industry, offering cutting-edge solutions for offshore vessels and workboats. The combination of high performance, reliability, and space-saving design makes the SP 45 R a valuable addition to any vessel requiring advanced station-keeping and thrust capabilities.
