South Korea’s HD Hyundai Marine Solution Completes Retrofit for Cool Company’s LNG Carrier
South Korea’s HD Hyundai Marine Solution (HD HMS) has successfully completed the re-liquefaction retrofit of an LNG carrier owned by Bermuda-based LNG carrier owner and operator Cool Company (CoolCo).
The retrofit project was carried out on the LNG carrier Kool Glacier at Yiu Lian Dockyard (Shekou) in China. Lloyd’s Register (LR) provided technical oversight and classification support for the installation of the re-liquefaction unit, ensuring the project was completed on schedule.
LR’s Global Gas Technology Director, Jose Navarro, commented, “LR’s reputation as a trusted partner for LNG operators looking to enhance efficiency and sustainability is evident in this successful retrofit project. By supporting CoolCo in achieving its goals, LR continues to lead the way in the transition to a greener maritime industry.”
The re-liquefaction system installed on the Kool Glacier is designed to manage boil-off gas (BOG) during transportation and terminal waiting periods. The ALaT TBF 1800 sub-cooling re-liquefaction system now allows the vessel to condense and liquefy BOG, improving operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Richard Tyrrell, CEO of CoolCo, praised LR for their technical expertise and timely solutions throughout the retrofit project. He noted that LR’s support in obtaining necessary notations for the re-liquefaction unit played a crucial role in meeting scheduling requirements.
The successful commissioning and testing of the retrofit were completed ahead of schedule, with the Kool Glacier setting sail on March 16, 2025. The vessel underwent gas trials during a voyage from Papua New Guinea to Thailand in early May 2025.
CoolCo has now retrofitted two vessels with re-liquefaction systems, with plans to upgrade a total of five vessels with sub-coolers. LR anticipates a growing demand for such retrofits as regulations tighten and fuel efficiency becomes a top priority in the maritime industry.
In addition to its work on LNG fleet efficiency, Lloyd’s Register recently granted approval in principle (AiP) for a standardized model of a multi-purpose LNG floater-offshore (MLF-O) to Samsung Heavy Industries, in collaboration with two other classification societies.
