Silicon Sensing Systems Ltd and Kongsberg Discovery AS Announce Co-operation Agreement

Silicon Sensing Systems Ltd and Kongsberg Discovery AS have recently entered into a co-operation agreement aimed at developing cutting-edge MEMS-based gyro technology that promises to revolutionize existing solutions in the industry.

The formal agreement between Silicon Sensing Systems Ltd and Kongsberg Discovery AS was finalized on Monday, June 2, at the EXPO in Osaka, Japan. The primary goal of this collaboration is to combine the expertise of both companies to innovate the next generation of inertial technology.

Gyro sensors play a crucial role in measuring changes in rotation angle over time, enabling the detection of direction, angle, and vibration. These sensors are widely used in various applications such as smartphones, game consoles, car navigation systems, industrial equipment, and devices requiring vibration detection, camera shake correction, and attitude control.

Through this partnership, Silicon Sensing and Kongsberg Discovery aim to leverage their engineering capabilities to accelerate product development within their respective domains. Kongsberg intends to utilize these advancements to enhance their high-performance systems, including Attitude and Heading Reference Systems (AHRS) and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS). On the other hand, Silicon Sensing plans to integrate the outcomes into its precision Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) inertial measurement units (IMUs), gyros, and accelerometers.

The shared ambition of Silicon Sensing and Kongsberg Discovery is to achieve ‘navigation-grade’ performance from a MEMS-based gyro. Navigation-grade gyroscopes are known for their high accuracy and stability, making them ideal for use in inertial navigation systems (INS) to precisely measure angular velocity and rotational motion. By pooling their resources and expertise, the two companies are poised to significantly expedite the development of such a gyro.
